Have a Friend, Be a Friend

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds”
(Hebrews 10:23-24 NIV).

These two verses remind us of two important things: God is faithful, and we need to help others keep going.

When life gets hard, we set our eyes on Jesus. He is the friend we can always rely on. Not necessarily the friend who will always get us out of trouble, although sometimes He does, but the One who stays with us in the thick of it. He listens, comforts, strengthens, and reminds us that we are never alone.

Hebrews 10:23 tells us to “hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Our hope isn't dependent on how our life is going. In good times and difficult times, our hope depends on the character of God. Even when we don't understand what He is doing, we can trust who He is. “He will never leave us or forsake us” (Deuteronomy 31:6 & Hebrews 13:5).

But the passage doesn't stop there. Verse 24 says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”

Our friendship with Jesus will shape the way we love others. He shows us how to be faithful, compassionate, patient, and encouraging. When we rest in His love, we can share that love with the people He places around us.

The love we offer isn't about fixing someone or having all the answers. Be a friend who listens without judgment, prays with faith, and encourages when hope seems far away. Showing up for a friend when life gets hard is a gift. Your presence matters. It conveys that they aren't alone.

The love we receive from Jesus is meant to be shared with those around us. And not just believers, but those who don’t yet believe in Him. We can demonstrate His love for them when we show our care and concern for their lives. Then we can point them toward the One who can offer lasting hope.

Therefore, hold tightly to the hope we have in Jesus, and look for opportunities to share His love with others. You never know how God might use your friendship, your encouragement, or simply your presence to help someone take a step closer to Him.
